THS Community Clothing Framework
A practical & modern clothing framework for the younger members of the THS community.
In the second half of 2018 the THS community was consulted on attitudes towards school uniforms for the younger members of the THS community (the “students”) using an online survey that considered wellbeing, practicality, affordability, comfort, appearance, and community perceptions.
The survey received 1055 responses.
The summary of responses are;
Students
Genders and ages (via school years) were well presented.
Students were fairly evenly split on whether uniform is important and valuable to them, with slightly more in favour of the uniform than against.
Many students provided feedback that the uniform is uncomfortable and not practical, with a large number of detailed and insightful comments on areas for improvement.
Female students most like the PE Shirt, Bomber Jacket and PE Shorts and would most like to change the Kilt, Girls Blouse and PE Shorts.
Male students most like the PE Shirt, Bomber Jacket and PE Shorts and would most like to change the Bomber Jacket, Knitted Jumper and Crested Shirt.
There was strong feedback in favour of hoodies and leggings for warmth and comfort in winter.
Parents & Teachers
Genders and ages (via school years) of the students of the parents were well presented and there was a good response from teachers.
Parents and teachers strongly believe that the uniform is highly important and valuable to them.
The majority responded that they believe that the uniform is of good quality, good value for money and easy to care for & clean.
Parents of female students most like the Bomber Jacket, PE Shirt and girls blouse and would most like to change the Kilt, Girls Blouse and PE Shorts.
Parents of male students most like the Bomber Jacket, Crested Shirt and PE Shirt and would most like to change the Knitted Jumper, Bomber Jacket and Tracksuit Pants.
All of community
All student genders and ages (via school years) were well represented.
On balance the community believes that the uniform is important and valuable to them.
The community believes that it is good quality and value-for-money, but that there are issues around comfort, practicality and warmth.
PE Shirts, PE Shorts and Bomber Jacket are favoured by the community.
The community would like to strongly change the Kilt and the Knitted Jumper.
The THS Uniform Review Team, made up of students, staff and parents from the school community, and acting as facilitators for the entire school community, analysed the survey responses and has developed the THS Community Clothing Framework (this website).
The framework is designed to be responsive, so as to meet the needs of the THS community now and into the future.
Based on the the most recent survey/feedback the immediate focus is on:
better information for the community &
a modernisation of the clothing.
Better Information
A key part of the framework are the information services to support it; to both communicate what the it is and how well framework is working within the THS community (ie issues recorded or not recorded! etc) - creating community wide shared understanding.
The framework will include:
- A website (that works on a mobile phone) to describe the clothing items and when they need to be worn; ie “everyday”, “presentation”, “active” & “safe-work” - this will include photos of the items.
- A website (that works on a mobile phone) to show a dashboard of issues - that can be used by students and the professional learning facilitation team (teachers, staff).
Clothing Modernisation
The other focus is on the modernisation of some of the clothing items and when they can be worn - making it more practical.
First up;
Sports jacket can be worn generally - “Everyday”
Modernise sports shorts (material update to make more practical)
New Female dress shorts
New Female dress pants
New Female skirt
Lighter/warmer/more modern jacket
Shoes (leather/practical/cheaper/universal)
Hats / Caps
The review of clothing items involves spending significant amounts of time in consultation, trials and review, and will be an ongoing process. The community’s approach will be to go through a deliberate and thorough process with all stakeholders to make sure the right choices are made moving forward.
Feedback
All processes going forward will include consultation and feedback from all key stakeholders and in particular the students. If you have any feedback, please the online form.
